The theme for the 2016 Annual Conference is: Global Societies: Fragmenting and Connecting. The conference will take place at Aston University from 6-8 April 2016.
Over the last few decades the world has experienced a period of significant instability. In addition to an epochal financial crisis whose effects continue to reverberate, there have been a swathe of significant geo-political upheavals across the globe. It may also be fair to suggest that such macro level events have been mirrored in various ways by increasing fractures and upheavals at the micro level of societies. Thus political and economic turbulence has destabilised communities and dislocated individual lives to an extent that has undermined faith in many democratic institutions, even amongst those that were once regarded as being most mature and developed.
On a more optimistic note, the extension of new technologies is creating possibilities for new forms of interpersonal relationships, as well as a resurgence of grassroots community and political engagement. Against this background, a key challenge for contemporary sociology is to document and foster greater understanding of these developments and their ramifications. In doing so, sociology might contribute to both policymaking and wider public engagement in a manner that offers possibilities for a progressive way forward from this global metamorphosis.
Our themes are deliberately broad and all-encompassing, designed to appeal to the entire spectrum of sociologists and stimulate lively debate. You are at the heart of the discipline. Your voice is important. Join the finest scholars from across the globe to lead the debate. Policy makers are coming to hear what you – the people with real experience – have to say.
The aims of this conference are: to showcase the latest sociological research; to attract a concentration of international specialists in our major research fields; to provide a forum in which to discuss the teaching of sociology and the professional practice of being a sociologist; and to facilitate debate, networking and professional development opportunities.
The BSA Annual Conference is the primary annual conference for sociology in the UK with opportunities for everyone connected to the discipline.
See you there! In the meantime, why not watch the highlights from 2015.
