The British Sociological Association invites submissions to its 60th Anniversary Conference. The 2011 Annual Conference follows the successful new format introduced in 2009.

We are delighted to confirm the keynote speakers for the 2010 Annual Conference are:

  • Ulrich Beck: renowned German sociologist best known for his work on 'risk society' and 'cosmopolitanism'/author of 'World at Risk' and 'Cosmopolitan Europe'.
  • Christine Delphy: acclaimed French feminist sociologist/co-founder with Simone de Beauvoir of the review 'New Feminist Issues' and author of 'Close to Home: A Materialist Analysis of Women's Oppression'.
  • Paul Gilroy: path-breaking UK social theorist of race, racism and culture/author of 'There Ain't No Black in the Union Jack' and 'Darker Than Blue: On The Moral Economies of Black Atlantic Culture'.
  • Helga Nowotny: esteemed Austrian sociologist of science and technology studies/President of the European Research Council/author of 'The Public Nature of Science Under Assault' and co-author of 'Rethinking Science'.
  • George Steinmetz: acclaimed US sociologist addressing the history of sociology and legacies of colonialism/author of 'The Devil's Handwriting', editor of 'The Politics of Method' and co-director of the film 'Detroit: Ruin of a City'.
  • Laurie Taylor: renowned UK sociologist and criminologist, founding member of The National Deviancy Conference, now public sociologist and presenter of BBC Radio 4's 'Thinking Allowed' programme.

There is a conference theme:  60 Years of Sociology, which will be addressed in both the main plenary sessions and the sub-plenary sessions in each discipline.  In this way we hope that more established figures in a number of fields will be represented at the conference.  There will also be Open Streams, in recognition that not everyone's field of interest is covered by the main stream titles.

We believe this will be a rewarding and exciting conference that will be of interest to all our members.
