Advanced Market Commitment wastes taxpayer donations: Report by Donald Light for Health Action International (15/04/2009)
The report shows how the current Advanced Market Commitment, as a way to get new vaccines to poor children, wastes taxpayer donations.  Most of the money will go to extra profits rather than to immunizing millions more children.  The AMC concept has been promoted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation since its inception as a "magic bullet" that will save millions of lives.

The report describes alternate designs of AMCs that were not used and invites new discussion of those alternatives so that advanced purchase commitments can lower prices and immunize millions more children.  An Executive Summary contains many of the key points.  Review the report.

SHI PhD Awards (23/12/2008)

The Foundation for the Sociology of Health & Illness (the charity which owns the journal Sociology of Health & Illness) seeks applications from sociology, social policy, medical, nursing, and other departments for this award of £8,000 p.a. to the student and £3,000 p.a. to the department for a PhD on any medical sociological topic. The university department must undertake to provide other necessary costs to supplement the part-funding and to provide suitable research training.

An application must be made by would-be supervisors (as with the ESRC case awards scheme) by the end of January, for a decision by the Foundation by the end of February. The Foundation expects to make two awards on this occasion. Successful departments may then make their own arrangements to select suitable students.

The Policy Press has just published a new book, 'Healthcare in the UK', by Ian Greener (10/12/2008)

The book contends that attempts to reform the NHS can only be understood by reference to both the wider social and political contexts, and to the organisational and ideational legacies present within the NHS itself. It aims to take students beyond a basic understanding of the historical development of health policy in the UK, to one that demonstrates an appreciation of the interactions between health policy, organisation and society.
