Sociology of Health and Illness Book Prize

The Sociology of Health and Illness (SHI) Book Prize of £1,000 is awarded annually each September to the author(s) or editor(s) of the book making the most significant contribution to medical sociology/sociology of health and illness and having been published over the three years preceding 1st January of the year in which the award is made.

 

The prize will be awarded at the BSA Medical Sociology Group Annual Conference, which will be held at Durham University on 1-3 September 2010.

2010 Nominations

Of 19 nominated books for the BSA Sociology of Health and Illness Book Prize 2010, we are pleased to announce that the judging panel have released their shortlist:
  • Chamberlain, John M. - Doctoring Medical Governance: Medical Self-Regulation in Transition (Nova Publishers, 2009). Nominated by Jason L Powell, University of Liverpool.
  • Mol, Annemarie – The Logic of Care: Health and the Problem of Patient Choice (Routledge – Taylor & Francis Group, 2008). Nominated by Dr Sara MacBride-Stewart, Cardiff University.
  • Rosengarten, Marsha – HIV Interventions: Biomedicine and the Traffic Between Information and Flesh (University of Washington Press, 2009). Nominated by Professor Vikki Bell, Goldsmiths, University of London.

A prize of £1,000 is awarded annually to the author(s) or editor(s) of the book making the most significant contribution to medical sociology/sociology of health and illness and having been published over the three years preceding 1st January of the year in which the award is made.


The winner will be announced at the BSA Medical Sociology Group Annual Conference, which will be held at Durham University, Wednesday 1st – Friday 3rd September 2010.

2009 Winner

 

We are delighted to announce that Dr Jessica Mesman won the SHI Book Prize 2009 for Uncertainty in Medical Innovation – Experienced Pioneers in Neonatal Care (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008). Dr Mesman was nominated by Dr Maggie Mort, Lancaster University.  Warmest congratulations to Dr Mesman on this achievement!
