Publications Prizes

The BSA is delighted to be able to reward excellence in published work in the discipline of sociology.  We currently award three prizes to publications/published articles which make a significant contribution to the discipline.

The Phil Strong Memorial Prize

The prize was established in memory of Phil Strong (1945-1995) one of the post-war generation of sociologists who influenced the development of medical sociology in the UK.

Phil’s work combined rigorous empirical analysis with sociological imagination. He was one of the foremost exponents of Goffman’s ideas, but he did not confine himself to interactionism, or indeed to sociology, in his reading or thinking which drew on philosophy, political science and literature. His empirical research included important studies of the clinical encounter, NHS reforms, and the social history of AIDS.  In memory of his contribution as an essayist, researcher and teacher this prize has been established to support post graduate research in medical sociology.

Please visit the Phil Strong Memorial Prize page for details of how to enter.

The Philip Abrams Memorial Prize

In recognition of his commitment to sociology as a discipline, the British Sociological Association established the Philip Abrams Memorial Prize to stimulate new ideas and fresh research in sociology by encouraging new British authors.  Please visit the Philip Abrams Memorial Prize page for details of how to enter.

SAGE Prize for Innovation and/or Excellence

The SAGE Prize for Innovation and Excellence is awarded annually to one paper in each of the BSA’s four prestigious journals: Cultural Sociology, Sociological Research Online, Sociology and Work, Employment and Society. Please visit the SAGE Prize page for more information.
