Realism and Social Research

Aims and Objectives

The study group would seek to continue the debate generated by the seminar series and its aims would be:

  • To review and develop realist social theory.
  • To encourage realist social research into substantive areas of social enquiry.
  • To review and develop realist methodological principles and their application to empirical research.

To bring together colleagues from the disciplines of geography, economics, linguistics, anthropology, philosophy and sociology to consider the relevance of realist social theory to methods of investigation and explanation in their disciplines.

Meetings

The group intends to hold 2-3 one-day seminars per year, based on the presentation of working papers and probably organised around a specific theme.

Membership

While the group's main focus will be sociological, those working in disciplines such as philosophy, history, sociolinguistics, geography, as well as those researching substantive areas of social life will be actively encouraged to participate. The group seeks not only to be cross disciplinary, but to also bring together those interested in developing empirical social research with social theorists in a mutually advantageous way.
