Introduction
The BSA Scottish Studies study group is a forum for discussing and disseminating sociological research (in the broadest terms) that has a focus on some aspect of Scotland, its people, communities, culture or society. In particular (though not exclusively), it aims to encourage the sharing of new research and work in progress.
Scotland is an important and interesting context for sociological research but the broader sociological context is also promoted and informs our conference/seminar themes. Therefore, the inclusion of debates on traditional and new approaches, developments in research agendas, methodologies, ´knowledge transfer´, applied research (to name a few), is actively encouraged.
As a focus for activity the study group the basic framework loosely revolves around an annual seminar/day conference for the study group. On some occasions additional activities may be planned, for example, at the BSA Annual Conference. The expectation is that a manageable cycle of events will revitalize and perpetuate the group.
News
The study group had two main events during the past year, a seminar at the BSA's 2006 annual conference followed by a successful day-conference in November 2006. The study group wishes to thanks all those who took part in the interesting discussions. Details and an overview of these events can be found below.
The study group aims to not just be a focus for discussion but to disseminate knowledge too. To this end we have been investigating, in association with the BSA, the potential to run a peer-reviewed e-journal for working papers and new research. We would also link outputs from the study group's seminars/day-conferences to this journal, where possible. We hope that more information will be available sometime later in 2007.
