BSA Postgraduate Forum Pre-conference Day - A non-conference, conference: A day of self-care

23 April 2019
Glasgow Caledonian University, UK (10am-5pm) - PROGRAMME

Event Programme

This event is centered on self-care, given all the recent attention to mental health in academia and the increasing precarious future PhD students face, we at the Postgraduate Forum wanted to provide a day that encourages relaxation and self-care.

Confessions of a PhD student by the BSA Postgraduate Forum

Ever spilled wine on a professor? Spelt your supervisors name wrong? We want to hear all your amusing stories from your PhD. Alternatively, if you have some serious questions you would like to discuss with fellow students, we will provide a safe space where you can raise questions, whether it be not getting along with your supervisor or losing motivation to finish your PhD.

Writing Retreat ran by Quill Out *optional

This is an opportunity for you to bring some work and get a few hours of solid writing under your belt. Please sign up to this for an indication of numbers (email Kate Haddow). Please note: Quill Out will out will not be offering individual feedback on your work, this a workshop to facilitate your writing only.

Walking Tour of Glasgow *optional

Quite often conferences are held in beautiful locations and we rarely get a chance to explore the cities we visit. This is your chance to explore Glasgow and get out of the conference venue.  The tour is expected to last from 11.30am–1pm, there will be an opportunity for breaks and it does require a moderate level of fitness. Please bring the appropriate footwear.

Mindfulness *optional

Much of the PhD process can be the most rewarding, yet mentally taxing experience for many. This session will allow for the development of self-care, reflection and relaxation. Including some aspects of yoga practice, these sessions are made accessible for all.

Hand Massages *optional

Please note the cost will be £3, please bring cash as we cannot accept card or other payments.

Funded Places

With additions to the budget, we feel it only fair to give those facing hardship a chance to attend. We will be able to offer 5 funded places on the Pre-conference Day for self-funded students. Please contact Owen McGill if you're interested in one of these places.
