BSA Postgraduate Forum - Life Post PhD: What’s Next?
17 October 2018 (10am-4pm)
BSA Durham Meeting Room, UK
About the Event
This event has been organised after a demand for our events to look at life beyond the PhD. The day is centred on some key areas to prepare postgraduates for an academic career.
Professor John Solomos (Warwick University) – What you need to know about REF
The research excellence framework (REF) is increasingly something PG’s are expected to know about. The thought of REF can be a scary one and we rarely get the opportunity to learn about what REF is and why it is important. John Solomos was part of the REF panel in 2014 and will talk about REF and cover what PG’s need to know.
Dr Jana Javornik (University of East London) – The academic job application
For most of us the thought of applying for perhaps our first ever academic job can be a daunting one. Jana will share her own experiences of applying for jobs and share some top tips.
Dr Hannah Bows (Durham University) – Ask an ECR
After been awarded her PhD in January 2017, Hannah has worked at Teesside University and is now at Durham University. Hannah will offer her own reflections on securing an academic job, with an opportunity for Q&A.
Dr Sally Brown (Edinburgh Napier University) – Writing Funding Bids
At some point we often think about future research projects and how it will be funded, as we know this can be incredibly competitive. Sally will be sharing her top tips of her own experiences of writing funding bids for research.
Other speakers will be announced shortly.
