About the Event
In this virtual post graduate event, we would like to bring together social scientists from different disciplines who engage in forms of ethnographic research. Hosting the event at the Towner provides a creative space to provoke discussions on the creative uses of methods and presentations. The aim of the event is to showcase creative ethnographic methods and representations and challenge our own ways of communicating knowledge accessibly to wider publics. The event will primarily engage postgraduates within the academy who wish to connect to wider audiences and make academic knowledge more accessible.
Embedding ourselves as researchers within a specific social setting is at the heart of ethnographic research. But what other ways are there to explore social phenomena? Which senses can we use to develop a deeper understanding of the dynamics and complexities of social life? How can we communicate our research using multi-sensory, visual and auditory aspects, thus opening our research to a wider and more diverse audience?
In this symposium we are attempting to shift the discussion and presentation of ethnographic research from standard written formats. Through challenging our ways of disseminating knowledge we aim to engage those publics with whom we conduct research and public citizens curious about social science research. This may offer an opportunity for all involved to gain new insights into the creation of knowledge and reflect on creative research approaches.
Call for Submissions
We will invite contributions which use traditional and alternative ways (e.g., graphic novels and cartoons, creative writing, poetry, audio/visual presentations) of presenting findings, data collection, and explorative methods. We welcome submissions (but not limited to) to the following themes:
• Performance studies and ethnography
• Storytelling and performance
• Narrative, sensory, imaginative and performative ethnography
• Collaborative methodologies
• Graphic novels
• Print and material artwork
• Digital ethnography, netnography, virtual ethnography
• Digital media and artwork
