Funded Places

The MedSoc Committee is pleased to offer a total of 30 funded places are available for this year’s annual conference, which has been supplemented by support from the Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness who are funding 14 places. The funded places will be available (including registration, day time meals, accommodation and conference dinner) for postgraduate students, unwaged people, and for individuals working outside academia, including sociologists in non-academic posts, those working in civil society organisations or service user groups, etc.

These places will be distributed to eligible individuals who apply to the BSA by the 29 May 2026 (for detailed eligibility criteria see below).

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for a free place for postgraduate students, you must:

  • Be registered for a postgraduate (Masters or doctoral-level) qualification
  • Not have access to institutional or other alternative funding to attend
  • Receive a stipend, wage or other allowance no greater than the 2025/26 research council maintenance grant including enhancements (i.e. no more than £19,237 per annum, or with additional weighting for students registered at institutions in London)
  • Have no other source of income (e.g. job) that amounts to more than the 2025/26 research council maintenance grant including enhancements

Please note that when allocating places, the number of applicants from each institution will be considered to ensure a fair spread of universities across the UK.

To be eligible for a free place for the unwaged, you must:

  • Be out of paid employment
  • Not have access to institutional or other alternative funding to attend
  • Not be a full-time student

To be eligible for a free place for individuals outside academia, you must:

  • Have a reasonable claim to be largely outside academia. (For example, you should not be a full-time student or hold a permanent or full-time research or teaching position in higher education.)
  • Not have access to institutional or other alternative funding to attend

In applying these eligibility criteria, discretion rests with the BSA Medical Sociology group committee, and its decisions are final. However, if you are unsure about whether you are eligible, you are invited to email Kirsten Boucher, who will resolve your query in consultation with the committee.

Successful applications will include all of the following:

  • Full conference registration
  • Lunch and refreshments on all 3 conference days
  • Accommodation on 8th and 9th September (room only)

There is no funding available for any other elements such as travel or Visa processing fees.

If you require a Letter of Acceptance to support your Visa application, please email the BSA Events Team and one will be sent to you. Please note that the BSA is not able to act as a sponsor for immigration purposes.
